How to know what platforms you should be on and what to create?
I’ve battled this year with what platforms to be on out of impatience I think. I reckon if you’re reading this you do too because I know my clients have and I think a lot of founders or individuals building a brand do as well. Ironically social media can make us feel we should. Now let me share what I know on this and have learnt to make your brain feel a little less overwhelmed and clearer.
Our misconception of being on a new social media platform
One thing that I was figuring out last week and unpacked with my mentor, which is hilarious now in hindsight, is that I wanted to spend time creating a channel on YouTube (along with the 64 other content creating platforms I’d like to post, contact and grow on).
Now, I’m sure like a lot of you that are reading, I went straight into that old conditioning. How can I make sure I build videos that fits the platform, the ratio, and edit? How can I create to the best of my ability for YouTube so the videos are amazing? What's that famous ‘algorithm’ doing at the moment? How can I connect and spend time on the platform too connecting to what my audience wants and needs on there? Because that's how I'm going to get seen, blah, blah, blah.
Now, this is where I want you to stop. Who else finds that exhausting and now just needs a wine? My mentor said to me, “You wouldn't pay for a billboard in advertising and stand next to it, would you?” Very true, I thought!
What we should do to get away from the social media ‘rat race’
So what I gathered and I know from business and coming away from the ‘rat race’ of social platforms and what we are conditioned to think is us leaning into what we believe in our energy, our product or brand and what we connect to. WHY we are truly showing up on the internet to make a difference - putting THAT out there and walking away.
Now the ‘how’...
What I want you to ask yourself is if you are stuck today on what to post or on what platform. I literally want you to sit with your thoughts and ask yourself. “Would I post something different today If I already had a million followers or subscribers?” Truly ask and be honest with yourself?
I ask because I know when I work and build businesses that are successful as soon as I work with my client and give them clarity back to themselves - we see the purpose for them or their brand. We then work on clarity to see what we are going to achieve in the future, the mindset shifts to believe we can not just the intention and create a clear strategy to get them there.
‘Show up like you already have a million followers, not like you are trying to gain them’
At that moment a deep rooted shift happens every time in every business I work with. That’s where their journey changes, and opportunities, the brand or the business build quicker. Why? Because “they are showing up like they already have a million followers, not that they are trying to gain them”.
When I say this is easier said than done, the biggest thing I want you to work on is your belief system because energy flows, I promise you. So if you don’t quite believe what I'm saying is true, you are right and will attract that! So bear that in mind.
Now if you truly do want to have more clarity and less overwhelm, finding clarity is exactly where you need to start. The moment we overthink, feel envy, or compare to others or even recognise in our own behaviour, the temptation to stalk every other person that is comparable to our brand or business just a bit too much, is our reg flag.
How creating with passion and authenticity will attract your ‘tribe’ instead of trying to post the ‘right thing’
Disconnect and go back to your drawing board. YOU are no one else. Literally write what you are passionate about, see and create your mission with clarity and with a path you believe in and ultimately your long term goals of what you or your brand deserves and are wanting.
Because then you will create with passion, love and authenticity for what you care about as opposed to caring first about what others think, for your product, your service, your message it will resonate. The energy will flow and then when your audience is attracted to you, that's when we engage with them and convert! That’s when we fully are in our connected authentic energy and we will create a connected audience back to who you truly are or truly the brands or businesses ethics, morals and features.
Converting your audience to buy your product, buy your service, because that's why we're doing what we do, right? As opposed to solely having a north star to just build a high number of followers, or subscribers because if you're truly connected to what you believe, what you think and are.
Why you shouldn’t care about the numbers - having a strong community is more important than having a lot of followers
For a second imagine our digital platforms like the real world. So maybe your brand’s shop, or your personal masterclass or stadium tour. In the real world we only have limited space to convert. So to convert your audience into just honouring what you think and you feel to help them, or to share your skill or messaging or for them to buy your product. Would you really want someone in there just to hold numbers? Because if that’s the case, are you truly giving a service to yourself, giving a service to your product or the people you want to help? Or are you actually just looking for validation and security in who you are?
If I'm resonating with you and you truly want to take back your power, I also want you to dig deep and look at your following. It's always really important that you go into your following and you actually remove the people that you know are not serving your platform - the fake followers as such, we know aren't really a person, some marketing spam etc.
Go in and remove those people. Because if you think of this like the actual real world and not the digital world of validation, you wouldn't actually want those people in your shop because they're taking up space, that you could have a possible converted customer standing there.
Now I know digital platforms don’t have a limit to space but I truly believe because of this concept so many people are brainwashed into the illusion of needing more and more and have lost sight in their clarity and belief in what their are personally doing and needing.
Therefore they almost overthink so much they fully lose themselves into creating for what they think the platform should be or from a place of validation. Ultimately never creating a connected tribe, community or pool of customers.
Disconnect from our conditioning and speak your truth
Adding the most ironic point to this blog guys is also how I’ve worked alongside personal clients and friends that have built platforms with well over a million followers all organically. And they built that community from fully being themselves, posting exactly what they wanted, connecting to their beliefs, morals, creative flair.
And ironically from the strategists that I have been sharing here, working directly and understanding all social media platforms, their marketing advice is actually always the above.
So the takeaway is to always build with PATIENCE, trust and vision. I’m always learning and being reminded of those things and I fully think it’s ok to feel that want and urge and get lost in the chaos of social media sometimes. So I believe we have to be kind to ourselves because when tough moments or doubt is upon us, we do overthink and compare but this is your sign always to shut down the noise in those moments and connect back to yourself.
Let’s release the need to just grow numbers and disconnect from our conditioning. Think beyond the validation of social platforms, comments, likes and following and tap back into why you are passionate about SPEAKING YOUR TRUTH, your purpose to help or educate others.
Or why you’re passionate and WHY you created your products or brand. Lead with your heart energy to connect to others and build your organic audience. If you need a content idea, “Post how you would if you had a million followers, don’t post to get a million.”
